My Dad told me my Grandpa once remarked

“Automatic transmission!?! Who the hell is going to pay extra for that!”

CVTs should be improved, not killed.

In the end having an infinite ratio of gears is better than having steps, we need to make peace with that.

Automatic transmissions are pretty great. I love having choices. Some days I want to drive a manual, some days I don’t.

He’s not wrong. The vast majority of people in the world don’t want to shift their own gears if they don’t have to. Most people want an easy car that looks good enough for whatever look they’re going for and will last forever. I can’t fault them for that.

I think automatics have there place, just not under my right foot.

In the U.K. on many cars it’s a £1,000 premium on something that’s more expensive to fix than a manual and doesn’t give you the same feeling of control as a manual.

I daily a manual, I’m getting ready to buy a second manual in the fall.

That said, if my delivery van where I spend ~8 hours a day were a manual I’d probably want to drive it off a cliff and kill us both.

Humans are lazy, in general. lol

Still, whether we car enthusiasts like it or not, the auto and its computerized manual siblings (SMG, DCT, etc) are now technologically superior to the standard manual. Their current day equivalents shift faster and sometimes even get better fuel economy.

If we’re talking about brand new cars off the lot, there’s really no reason to go after the manual version unless you absolutely must shift your own gears or really want to slice $800-$1000 off the purchase price of a vehicle.

I love manual transmissions, I really do. I wish all my cars had legit three pedal manuals. However I also believe the auto is one of the most important automotive inventions and someone who prefers one shouldn’t be shunned.

I thought being a car enthusiast was about loving cars, not being snobs. That’s not a rag on you, just a general complaint.

Outside of Oppo and Jalopnik, I would be called mentally ill for liking smarts. Seriously?

I just think that autos and manuals should be able to coexist though, not autos completely taking over everything. Kinda like other things in the world....

I think there should be an equal blend of both, not the way it is where autos are going to completely kill off manuals. And more cars should be available with both.

Sometimes life pushes you toward the car you need rather than the car you want.

My previous car was a Fiat 500 Sport with a manual and it was fun, but it was too small, my partner never wanted to ride in it, it didn’t really work for the dog, and it drove like crap in the snow thanks to the combo of traction control you can’t ever completely shut off and the sport tires. Plus, at the time I had a 50-mile round trip commute in the worst of Denver’s rush hour. It really sucks to work your butt off all day and then have to battle bumper-to-bumper traffic for an hour or more in a manual-transmissioned car. So I traded it for a Kia Optima LX that my partner would be ok riding in and driving, and the dog loves it. And my commute immediately improved.

But now I don’t need a car because of my new job providing me with a work vehicle. Also my partner got a new car (a 2018 Elantra Limited) that is way nicer than my base model Optima, which means we drive that car almost exclusively.

My plan now is to pay off the Optima and eventually get rid of it, and then I’ll probably look at something with a manual. Though it’ll more likely be a 4x4 truck or a Jeep CJ or Wrangler.

Well, it’s different if it’s what life dictates. That’s fine then. At least you appreciate them for what they’re good at :)

He speaks the truth, but accepts that people can’t handle the truth!!!

(I have only ever owned cars with manual transmissions. Though in the future, I would consider making an exception if it’s a BEV or a good hybrid).

What didn’t you like about the traction control in the Fiat? I’ve got a 2012 500 Sport with an automatic, and traction control is literally the only way my car can get up my driveway when there is snow. I’ve tried many times with it on and off, and it goes right up when the traction control is on.

I completely understand moving on from that car, I just love the traction control. Maybe it’s different in a manual though.

Honestly, if it were an automatic it probably would have been much better. The problem was: let clutch out, wheel spins, traction control says “NOPE”, immediately cuts power, car stalls. After it happened one or two or three hundred times on one drive home, I could barely resist the urge to set it on fire. I’ve never had a car do that before.

Interesting. I can see how that would be frustrating. It’s certainly a lot more helpful in an automatic, since it won’t stall. My driveway is steep. Without traction control I’d just spin my tires aimlessly. With traction control, it cuts power and just chugs up the drive like a very cute little train.

One of my co-workers had a 500 Pop with an automatic and she had no problems in the snow.

You can sort of turn it off, but if it decides it doesn’t like what you’re doing it comes back on anyway.
